Getting Around

LAND
Vanuatu has approximately 1,400km of road of which a little over 50km is paved. Only Port Vila and Luganville have bitumen roads and these are confined to the town areas. The majority of unsealed roads on Efate and Santo are of fair quality but have suffered from their irregular maintenance since being constructed in World War II by the US forces stationed here.

There is no actual public transportation system, but there is an abundance of privately owned and operated 10-14 seat minibuses . These privately owned buses do not operate on any fixed routes and instead travel to locations as requested by their passengers. They are similar in nature to that of the taxi service. However they are much cheaper than a taxi and generally cost 100Vt for adults and 50Vt for children. They can hailed by waving them down on the side of the road or at the many designated bus stop.

Taxis can be found on all islands in one form or another. For example in rural areas they may be 4WD vehicles. It is generally considered wiser to negotiate the cost of the fare before embarking on the ride.

Vehicles and mopeds (a small motorbike ) can be hired in Port Vila. The minimum age for hiring a car is 23 and 17 for mopeds.

AIR
Travelling to and from Vanuatu is made easy by regular international flights by the regional carriers originating from Sydney , Brisbane , Melbourne , Noumea , Fiji , and Auckland .

The main airports are at Bauerfield, near Port Vila, and Pekoa on Espíritu Santo Island ; there are also 26 smaller airfields, with a further three planned. Vanuatu has two airlines, Vanair which operates internal flights throughout the archipelago, and Air Vanuatu for flights from Bauerfield to Australia , New Zealand , Fiji , Solomon Islands and New Caledonia . Local charter flights can also be arranged upon request.

SEA
Port Vila and Luganville have international deep-water ports with fully functioning customs and immigration facilities. These ports host regular visits by cruise ships such as those of the P&O line. Touring yachts are also common visitors to the area.
There are also major shipping services, run by a number of operators, to Australia , New Zealand , Europe and New Caledonia with the main ports being Port Vila and Luganville.
